On Monday, the Portland Trail Blazers opened things up with a bang. Joe Cronin has signed a multiyear contract extension to remain as the team’s general manager. This move is the result of Cronin’s extraordinary efforts on behalf of the organization thus far. He assumed the general manager role last May, replacing bad GM practice poster child Neil Olshey.
Cronin’s path with the Blazers started more than 19 years ago when he interned with the team. He was a steady, classy presence who steadily climbed the organizational ranks and proved his worth from four different ownership and executive leadership regimes in the franchise. He was elevated to assistant general manager in 2021. This success paved the way for his appointment as general manager the following year.
Under Cronin’s leadership, the Blazers seem to be in the process of building a competitive roster. They’re mixing veterans of advanced age with exciting new blood. Key veteran players such as Anfernee Simons, Deni Avdija, Jerami Grant, and Deandre Ayton have major roles in this vision. Simultaneously, emerging talents such as Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Toumani Camara, and Donovan Clingan are expected to contribute to the team’s future success.
The contract extension is a sign of how far the team has come in Jody Allen, the team chair’s, eyes. Rep. Norton conveyed her excitement about Cronin’s leadership and the direction he is taking the growing organization.
“Joe has demonstrated leadership and vision during his time as general manager, and I’m excited to see him continue building the foundation for a long-term, winning team.” – Jody Allen
In his statement on the extension, Cronin again focused on his desire to build a winning culture in the organization.
“My vision is to have a competitive roster with the potential for sustained success, while creating a culture that helps all our players, coaches and staff thrive.” – Joe Cronin
Cronin’s fingerprints have certainly already reshaped the Blazers’ roster and organizational culture. It’s what supporters and stakeholders alike have their fingers crossed for—an era of improved competitiveness and success. His deep experience and strategic orientation are expected to be key, along with much else, to guiding the franchise through the challenges that lie ahead.
