The International Golf Federation (IGF) has announced an exciting new addition to the Olympic program: a mixed-team golf event. That innovative competition will make its first appearance at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. It will be a mixed-gender team competition, with each team consisting of one male and one female athlete.
Similarly, the new mixed-team event will be filled with the best athletes picked from individual competitions. They’ll team up together and do their country proud within this new, vibrant, innovative format. The competition consists of 36 holes divided between two thrilling 18-hole rounds. The unique arrangement results in a fast paced and exciting atmosphere for players and fans alike.
To highlight that unique spirit of collaboration, only one team from each participating country will compete. The Riviera Country Club has a storied tradition of golf greatness. It has thus appropriately been chosen as the venue for this exciting new competition. The new mixed-team event will be held in between the men’s individual and women’s events. This timetable provides for a slick introduction of Olympic golf into the 2020 games.
Antony Scanlon, IGF executive director, said he was thrilled to add a new event. He is convinced that it will raise the sport’s profile in a transformational way. He stressed that this new format is intended to build upon the momentum from golf’s reintroduction into the Olympic program. Her return in 2016 ended over a century of absence for the sport.
“Golf was incredibly successful at Paris 2024 and as we continue building on the momentum from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, we’re excited to bring even more attention to our sport through this additional format.” – Antony Scanlon
Scanlon pointed to the enthusiasm from athletes, particularly about the mixed-team concept. He pointed out that the competitors’ excitement level is through the roof, especially given that they’ll get to play along with their compatriots.
“The athletes were very enthusiastic about their desire to play with their compatriots, and we look forward to watching them compete together in Los Angeles.” – Antony Scanlon
The introduction of a mixed-team golf event marks a significant milestone for the sport as it strives to enhance its Olympic presence. After a successful return at the Rio Games, Golf was again in the limelight with solid performances at the Tokyo Summer Olympics. This thrilling new format electrifies fans and builds camaraderie between male and female competitors.
The world is eager to see what’s next from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Of all sports, the mixed-team golf event particularly stands out as a point of pride for sports inclusivity and collaboration. The IGF is committed to further developing golf within the Olympic structure. This promise reinforces the laudable, progressive movement toward gender equity and collaboration so prevalent in today’s athletics.
