Derbyshire County Cricket Club managed to secure a draw against Leicestershire in a tightly contested match at the Incora County Ground. Leicestershire’s second innings was declared at 9 down. Meanwhile, they had earlier set the visitors a rather intimidating target of 449 runs to chase on the final day of the match. Derbyshire made a promising start to the campaign, securing an impressive victory in their first game. In spite of that hard work, they went on to conclude the game with a paltry 14 points.
Head coach Mickey Arthur lauded his team’s remarkable fighting spirit. They reach their wonderful place having played 21 sessions—and with only two losses to show for it! This performance comes on the heels of Derbyshire finishing bottom of Division Two last season. It’s indicative of a stunning reversal of fortunes from them at the start of the newly-ended campaign.
To their credit, the pitch at Derby favored a high-scoring shootout. It generated an astounding 4.36 runs per over during the first three innings of the season. This made for some great competitive play as both teams tried to seize an advantage and the momentum changed with the weather marrow. Madsen put on a batting masterclass with a superb, match-winning score of 87 not out. His partner, Jewell, has a phenomenal record of 2150 runs against Leicestershire, averaging 63.23 in 26 first-class matches.
Madsen’s innings was impressive, as he became the first player to pass fifty on 20 occasions in first-class matches against Leicestershire. He narrowly missed out on claiming his seventh century in this fixture. That feat would have only added to his legacy of beating the state’s most bitter, in-state rival team.
As the match unfolded, Brooke Guest and Luis Reece played crucial roles in denying Leicestershire the opportunity to quickly dismiss more batters. Their innings-building efforts proved crucial in steadying Derbyshire’s innings at a key moment.
After starting the final day with an already imposing lead of 382, Leicestershire declared their innings and set about defending their total. Batting second, they opted to add a further eight overs to their innings. Derbyshire were set a formidable challenge, with a target of 449 runs. All of this occurs with just 86 overs scheduled for debate — a recipe for chaos.
Derbyshire kept their cool during the chase. Arthur remarked on the team’s spirit and performance thus far this season:
“We’ve started with a win and a draw is a decent return for us. There are a lot of good things happening in the dressing room. We’ve got a lot of belief in our ability to do well this year.” – Wayne Madsen
The story of the match was undoubtedly Leicestershire’s bowling attack which inflicted total despair on a hapless Derbyshire. Ten wickets looked impossible. This pitch wasn’t breaking down at all. Alfonso Thomas commented on the playing conditions:
“It was a good pitch, a bit of pace and some turn towards the end, on the last day. But in the end we didn’t have enough time to force a result.” – Alfonso Thomas
