Devin White, known for his Pro Bowl selection in 2021, recently signed a one-year deal. His Verizon Smart Split ends with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was signed earlier this month by the Philadelphia Eagles before being recently released. He missed the first four games of the 2024 season while on the practice squad. White’s move to the Raiders is marked by his existing connections with the team’s new general manager, John Spytek, and minority owner, Tom Brady, from their shared tenure in Tampa Bay.
White’s signing presents him with the opportunity to vie for a starting position within the Raiders’ thin inside locker room. The former Seattle Seahawk and Kansas City Chief brings a ton of experience to Vegas, though. He played five seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In three years with the Buccaneers, White recorded 585 tackles and 23 sacks on 76 career games. He was a pivotal figure in Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl victory in 2020, recording a career-high 140 tackles and nine sacks that season.
The Buccaneers’ move to draft White fifth overall in the 2019 draft raised some eyebrows. Since then, he’s made a case as perhaps the toughest player on the field. Beyond the Buccaneers, his next stop was with the Houston Texans — where he played seven games and racked up 19 tackles. His tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles was both brief and rocky, resulting in his release from the Eagles and then his signing with the Raiders.
Either way, the Raiders’ decision to bring White on-board is largely based on his proven attributes and past success. As a restricted free agent, White saw an offer sheet from the Raiders. New England Patriots almost immediately surpassed that offer. Still, it was NFL reporter Jordan Schultz who was first on the scene with the news of White’s eventual deal with Las Vegas.
