Jasprit Bumrah Set to Make IPL Comeback After Injury Layoff

Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is poised to return to competitive cricket, as he prepares for his comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following a lengthy injury hiatus. The 31-year-old has not played since he injured his back in the fifth Test against Australia in January. To make a comeback, he’s training greatly with the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Bumrah’s absence from the field has been notable, particularly as he missed England’s recent white-ball tour to India and the Champions Trophy. His most recent outing was in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. One of the highlights of the series, he put on an absolute masterclass, taking 32 wickets at a phenomenal average of 13.06. His performance was instrumental in leading India to glory. His go to stats stood out at the SCG were match figures of 2-33 in the first innings of the Sydney Test. The back problems that had plagued him throughout the series sadly prevented him from bowling in the second innings.

For Bumrah, his preparations begin for the IPL. Fans would want him to repeat that in the upcoming five-Test series against England. His return is viewed as a much-needed boost for India’s bowling attack. Mahela Jayawardene, head coach of Bumrah’s IPL team, the Mumbai Indians, is bullish enough on his readiness to say so.

“He’s training today and should be available.” – Mahela Jayawardene

Jayawardene explained that Bumrah came back from training only last night and had some strong sessions at the NCA.

“He arrived last night. He had his sessions with NCA [India’s National Cricket Academy] to finalise that.” – Mahela Jayawardene

Jayawardene too pointed out the buzz surrounding Bumrah’s return. He called for patience with Bumrah as he returns after an extended layoff.

“Boom’s coming back from a pretty decent lay-off, so we need to give him that space. Not expect too much. Knowing Jasprit, he will be up for it.” – Mahela Jayawardene

Bumrah is currently the world’s number one Test bowler. His return is a massive relief for the Mumbai Indians and the men in blue. Quality bowling Murali Vijay should be fit for their first match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Monday.
