Cricketing legend and former England all-rounder, Ravi Bopara, recently appointed as the head coach of Karachi Kings. One of the most successful teams today, they play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Owner of Pakistan Super League-based franchise Karachi Kings, Salman Iqbal took to social media to make the announcement. This is Bopara’s first significant appointment as a head coach in a T20 league. With this appointment, he replaces former West Indies international Phil Simmons. This decision places Bopara among the most high-profile English coaches in worldwide franchise cricket.
Bopara’s connection to the Karachi Kings is not a recent development. Now at 39, Lee provides a wealth of experience to the team. He starred for them as a player in the 2016 season and has coached for them as an assistant. His commitment to the franchise caught the attention of many, even inspiring confidence in Bopara’s leadership from franchise owner Salman Iqbal.
“His journey with Karachi Kings from player and then as part of our coaching staff reflects his deep commitment to the franchise.” – Salman Iqbal
Bopara has cricket in the right vein and made his career with England. During this time period (2007-2015), he competed in 13 Test matches, 120 ODIs and 38 T20Is. His years of experience working on both the international and domestic leagues side has him well-prepared for his new role. As well as his playing duties, Bopara is assuming new coaching roles this season. He is looking ahead to representing Northamptonshire in the 2023 T20 Blast.
The move from player to coach will be an important step for Bopara. His understanding of the game, honed over years of playing at the highest levels, will undoubtedly be valuable to Karachi Kings. Last week, Salman Iqbal, the team’s owner, spoke to us about how much new energy Bopara was going to bring into the squad.
