On June 15, 2023, Tamim Iqbal, former captain of Bangladesh national cricket team, survived a cardiac arrest in a domestic match. He has now been discharged from the hospital. He was playing in a league match for Abahani Club in Dhaka’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League when the incident happened. He subjected himself to daily and extremely intense chest pain. The 36-year-old cricketer was swiftly attended to by medics at the nearby hospital. After suffering a heart attack, he had an angioplasty to clear an artery blockage.
Tamim suffered a major cardiac event on the pitch. This incident highlighted just how sudden and unexpected these events can be. Known for his striking and illustrious 2007-2023 career, Tamim was at the forefront of Bangladesh cricket. He had a record number of 391 caps for the country in all formats. He is Bangladesh’s number one run-scorer in one-day internationals, racking up an incredible 15,249 runs in his international career.
Doctors gave Tamim the kind of care he called “amazing” during his hospitalization. The flight medical team conducted an angioplasty to address the arterial blockage. This routine but miraculous procedure allows high-quality blood flow to return in arteries that have been blocked. This well-timed intervention made all the difference in bringing Tamim’s timely recovery and release from the hospital home.
In his first communication after being discharged, Tamim thanked the medical team that helped save his life. He expressed gratitude to the doctors for their tireless care and treatment, as it served an essential key to his recovery journey. This near-miss is a reminder of how precarious health can be, even for elite athletes.
