England’s cricket team is on the hunt for a new captain for their one-day and T20 sides following Jos Buttler’s resignation. Buttler resigned after two-and-a-half years in the position, following the trigger of England’s sensationally early exit from the Champions Trophy. His departure marks the end of a challenging period for the team, which has struggled in recent global tournaments despite their 2019 50-over World Cup and 2022 T20 title victories.
Buttler’s resignation was always going to lead to a flurry of speculation as to who might succeed him. One possible successor, former captain Joe Root, has already disqualified himself. Root explained to Sky Sports that the “ship has sailed” on him stepping in as England’s next limited-overs captain.
“I’ve done my time as a captain in an England shirt but I’m sure whoever gets the opportunity to do it will be extremely proud and do a brilliant job,” – Joe Root
There’s a case for splitting the captaincy between the 50-over and T20 formats, as Brendon McCullum proposed. Such a strategy would enable England to more effectively rotate players in their workloads and zero in on the most pressing needs for the team. Harry Brook, Buttler’s vice-captain, would be the most deserving, it is to be hoped, of inheriting the role. But worries had been raised about his workload, especially considering that he has become a key player in all three formats.
Beyond just the players in the squads of the last year, though, England is looking outside of the internal candidates. A successful domestic captain should be the likely choice to provide new leadership with international experience to take the team in a new direction. One of those who have previously indicated their interest is wicketkeeper Sam Billings, who has noticeably welcomed the added responsibility.
“I would jump at the chance to be captain,” – Sam Billings told BBC Sport
Recognizing the urgency of the situation to have a full-time captain, England is still being careful and deliberate. The decision on a new captain will not be rushed, ensuring that the right leader is chosen to guide the team through future challenges.
