Ángel Cabrera Claims Victory at Inaugural Hall of Fame Invitational

Ángel Cabrera-adjudged champion at the first-ever James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational. With that, he had captured his first career title on the PGA Tour Champions—proudly. The Argentinian golfer sealed the win with a birdie on the 17th. This incredible huge reverse over the shoulder shot increased his total score to 1-under 71. This victory is perhaps the most significant milestone in Cabrera’s storied career thus far. It ensures him immunity on the 50-and-over circuit indefinitely through 2026.

Cabrera began the last round tied with in-competition player K.J. Choi, each man battling for the lead position. As they neared the all-important 17th hole, Cabrera’s key birdie lifted him into a tie for the lead. With the tournament ending on the 18th hole, he navigated to the 18th green like a seasoned professional. From 18 feet, he had just two putts to make the par he needed to win.

Of all these victories, Cabrera’s felt the most transformative. The timing of his arrest was harsh, coming just months after his release to parole in August 2023. He was sentenced to two years for threatening and stalking Cecilia Torres Mana. These charges were the result of him having entered a guilty plea. His total sentence in prison was three years and ten months, served concurrently with another existing sentence. In November 2022, he went to trial for similar charges against another victim, Micaela Escudero.

Looking back on his time incarcerated, Cabrera said that prisoners fought to maintain what little freedom they had.

“The lack of freedom is something really difficult, really hard,” – Ángel Cabrera

Understandably, Cabrera at first did not expect Torres Mana and Escudero to forgive him. He accepted blame for his actions during his rough patch.

“I made serious mistakes. I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted. That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of crossing paths with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil, but I did bad things.” – Ángel Cabrera

Cabrera’s return to competitive golf makes this victory even more special, as it was accompanied by a $330,000 payday. In a matter-of-fact tone, he reflected on the emotional significance of winning and what it means for his life ahead.

“Everything I’ve gone through the last few years, being here, having a chance to win, is very emotional,” – Ángel Cabrera

Ángel Cabrera’s win at the Hall of Fame Invitational reestablishes him in professional golf’s elite. It’s a huge moment of personal redemption — for him. As a past champion, he holds a lifetime exemption to play in the Masters. He looks forward to pursuing a fascinating career along this exciting new trajectory.
