Plans for Scottish Premiership Reconstruction Under Consideration

The Scottish Premiership’s Competitions Working Group (CWG) are engaged in ongoing discussions around possible league reconstruction. Among the possibilities one of which they say they are committed to is a 10-team top-flight division. This effort is a response to concerns regarding fixture overload. Its impact is most felt by the clubs that routinely compete in European club competitions – the Champions, Europa and Conference Leagues.

The Scottish Premiership is a 12-team league. The CWG is currently pondering plans to grow even bigger, into an expanded 14- or 16-team model. It’s our goal to lessen the burden on club schedules. This pressure comes from the increasingly large burden of extra League Phase games that rival clubs have to juggle.

The CWG is anticipated to meet soon to discuss these various proposals…

“The SPFL’s competitions working group will be meeting shortly to discuss several different options for league reconstruction.” – SPFL spokesperson

The changes are not final yet, if adopted would take effect as soon as next season. Stakeholders believe the 2026/27 campaign is a more practical timeline for any changes to be in place.

Despite continued conversations taking place, these possible changes still have not been floated to any of the clubs involved. It’s important to know that this gap in communication is happening. To really kickstart league reconstruction, we need strong backing. An alternative plan requires the support of at least 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs. A vast majority of teams need to willingly give their support. In particular, 75 percent of clubs from both the Premiership and Championship, as well as 75 percent of all 42 SPFL teams, must approve.

Fans and stakeholders can access the current Scottish Premiership table, fixtures, and results online, ensuring transparency throughout this period of potential change. As conversations continue, we focused on an outcome that best preserves competitive integrity. While we do that, we address the unique logistical challenges presented by fixture congestion.
