Gardner Minshew, known for his role as a starter in the NFL, has joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a backup quarterback to Patrick Mahomes. Minshew has six seasons, mostly as a starter under his belt. Now, he’s looking forward to embracing a reserve role. Minshew’s played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Las Vegas Raiders. Today, his winding road leads him to the Chiefs, the team he wanted to sign with before the Raiders cut him loose at the beginning of free agent signing season.
Minshew’s history with the Chiefs goes back to 2019, when he visited the team prior to the predraft process. He would go on to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the draft. Intriguingly, the Chiefs were his opponent in his first NFL game as a rookie. With hope fading after being waived by the Raiders, Minshew was excited the door opened to Kansas City.
“Super fired up to be part of just a winning organization, a winning culture,” – Gardner Minshew
Famed for his durability, Minshew has only missed two games to injury in his professional career. He’s missed more than three games combined in the last seven seasons. All of these departures were the result of injuries sustained during that week’s last regular season game. His experience, toughness and flexibility to play multiple positions on the line should make him a welcome addition to the Chiefs’ roster.
Minshew has gushed in the past about Andy Reid’s offensive genius and is keen to operate within his system.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of [Reid’s] offenses,” – Gardner Minshew
“I feel like that kind of play style of just understanding and feeling space, understanding leverage in numbers, I think that really serves you well in [Reid’s] system.” – Gardner Minshew
Minshew’s enthusiasm for Reid’s system is evident. His awareness of space and leverage, he says, will add an interesting dynamic and fit well with the Chiefs’ offensive philosophy. Adopting this mentality, he looks forward to doing whatever it takes to help the team win on a daily basis.
The move from starter to backup can be a big adjustment. None of that will guarantee success, but Minshew is excited to approach this new opportunity with the same spirit and fervor. His eagerness to learn, grow and transform highlights a promise and potential within him that could benefit the future success of the team.
“I knew in my head that this was where I wanted to be,” – Gardner Minshew
