Rovman Powell and Kraigg Brathwaite resign from captaincy, the West Indies cricket team. This is a big change for the national team. Powell, captain of the T20 side since 2023, will be replaced by Shai Hope. Brathwaite, who skippered the Test side for three years, immediately resigned. He took this decision in order to allow a new leader to prepare before the next T20I series against Australia.
With Rovman Powell at the helm, the West Indies T20 side had some high points. He saw the team through home series victory against teams with heavyweight status in world cricket like India, England and South Africa. These victories have been integral in raising the team’s competitive profile in the ever-growing sport of international T20 cricket. Powell’s leadership will be remembered for these achievements, as he played a key role in revitalizing the team’s performance on home soil.
Shai Hope, who has previously captained the West Indies in one-day internationals, will take over the T20 reins from Powell. Hope will then captain the team in up to six highly competitive T20 fixtures this June. The 2025 matches are headed for a new set of shores: England and Ireland. Yet his youthful experience on the squad may provide a different cutting edge. It will further provide renewed impetus as they get ready for increased international competition.
Simultaneously, Kraigg Brathwaite’s period as Test captain was over as he resigned. Having assumed the role in March 2021, Brathwaite’s tenure saw the West Indies navigate major adversity, as well as historic achievement. Under his own captaincy, the team savored one of the proudest moments in Indian cricket with a home series victory against England in 2022. In 2024, they went on to clinch a historic Test victory Down Under—their first in 27 years.
Brathwaite’s decision to resign at this point would fit with the new approach of a new cycle for West Indies cricket. He expressed confidence that a new leader would emerge to guide the Test side as they prepare for a challenging three-match Test tour against Australia scheduled for June and July.
The West Indies cricket team is moving into a new era with Shai Hope leading the way and a new Test captain still to be determined. Powell and Brathwaite have left a powerful leadership legacy, one that will impact how the team catapults forward into its next direction.
