Neil Wagner Returns to Durham for New Season After International Retirement

In other news, Durham have re-signed New Zealand pace bowler Neil Wagner on a red-ball only contract. This decision follows his announcement to retire from international cricket in February 2024. The veteran spinner, who has played 165 first-class matches, scalped a staggering 841 first-class wickets. With those experiences under his belt, he is set to have a huge influence on the domestic circuit as he links up with Durham.

His previous tournaments in England have seen him play for many counties, including Northamptonshire, Essex, Somerset and Lancashire. His championship experience, in English conditions, will be completely invaluable. He’s going back to Durham, for whom he played one Championship and three One-Day Cup games last season. Sadly, injury limited his time, but it certainly would have been his desire to speak more freely this go-around.

The 37-year-old bowler expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining Durham, stating, “I am extremely excited to join Durham again.” He added that he “loved and enjoyed [his] short time there last season,” but feels he has “some unfinished business with wanting to contribute and play a role for a great club.”

Wagner’s first match back with Durham is on June 22 against Sussex, though he could play later for the team. He’ll continue to be a resource for the team through their campaign finale in September. This is a make-or-break year for Wagner. It is his last match at home in domestic cricket before he retires from the game in New Zealand. His swansong match for Northern Districts will be against Otago. Fast forward to March 9, 2023, the final day of this match, when the winner would be crowned Plunkett Shield champions.
