Joey Barton, former professional footballer and manager, has recently received a 12-week prison sentence, suspended. He was charged and convicted of assaulting his wife, Georgia, at their Georgia home in June of 2021. The violent confrontation resulted in Georgia suffering severe bruising and bleeding after a tumultuous fight between the couple. The fight broke out after both had been drinking bourbon with two other couples while their own children slept upstairs.
The court found that the argument stemmed from a domestic dispute. The director of football at Fleetwood Town FC, Joey Barton, recently candidly confessed to winning a “screaming match” with his spouse. He admitted that no physical fight happened at all. Though he has denied this, the evidence brought to court was enough to convict him of this crime.
"It was, plainly, something not caused by an accident." – Ms Duong
On the night of the shooting, police discovered Barton still sleeping in his bedroom. They complied with him under the pretext of travel and arrested him while he was still intoxicated. His wife had called the police that day, saying that her husband had “just hit [her].” She subsequently recanted her accusations in a letter sent to prosecutors. Screen capture from Barton’s provided no-comment interview at a local police station shortly after his arrest.
Barton’s playing days saw him at some clubs that included Manchester City, Newcastle, Marseille, Burnley, Rangers, and Queens Park Rangers. He played once for the full England national team. Unsurprisingly, he has not been silent about his distaste for the court’s ruling.
"I'm really disappointed with the magistrate's verdict," – Joey Barton
Regardless of this latest verdict, Barton still plans to take the decision to a higher court. His defense attorney, Simon Csoka, contended there were multiple ways Georgia’s wounds could have been inflicted unintentionally.
"There are a number of circumstances where the injury may have been sustained accidentally." – Simon Csoka
