The Atlanta Drive were crowned champions in the TGL’s pilot season of the TGL Indoor Golf League. They pulled ahead of New York with an exciting 6-5 victory in Tuesday night’s Championship match. Atlanta stormed back to win the spark-filled best-of-three finals. The winning team took home a $9 million prize and each of the four winning players took home $2.25 million to celebrate their victory! Second place finisher New York splits $4.5 million grand prize.
What should have been a ritualistic second finals match was instead a watery and windy curtain of rage. With the score level at 2 after nine holes of alternate shot, Cameron Young delivered big for New York, rolling in a 9-foot eagle putt to put New York up 4-2. This quickly landed Atlanta under pressure to act fast.
Atlanta’s smart play paid off as they tested with the hammer, making the next hole worth two points. Billy Horschel took advantage and rolled in the 11-foot birdie putt. This important backbreaker came right when New York City FC had responded with their own fierce counterattack. The tension kept building through the match, leading to a pivotal moment.
Patrick Cantlay played that role for Atlanta. He made that 6-foot birdie putt, clinching their historic 6-5 win against New York. This game changing move ultimately won the game for Atlanta. It celebrated a rousing result to the league’s inaugural season.
