Atlanta Drive GC pulled off the closest match-up of the day vs. New York GC, taking the championship in a nail-biting 6-5 victory. The playoff showdown, featuring the No. 3 seed Atlanta and No. 4 seed New York, was marked by strategic plays and critical errors. What an opening way to get everyone pumped! New York’s Young opened the competition with an impressive 330-yard drive, but Atlanta’s Thomas wasted no time catching up, countering with a monster 338-yard bomb.
The tense battle featured crucial turning points on multiple holes. On Hole 11, Atlanta was able to tie the match back up at 4-4. Despite Fowler's missed putt on his third shot, Horschel's precision came through as he drilled a near 12-foot putt. This brought the match back to all square, responding to Cantlay’s clutch putt and Schauffele’s close call.
New York took a new lead for a short time on Hole 13, finally taking advantage of Atlanta’s misfortunes. Young made a three-foot putt as New York took a 5-4 lead. This occurred following Thomas’ hilarious attempt to save par with a nearly seven-foot putt on his fourth shot. New York’s lead was short-lived, as Atlanta fought back and eventually powered their way to the win.
Matt Fitzpatrick’s absence stung New York doubly, for his presence would have helped change the tenor of the matchup. On Hole 9, Fowler came inches from changing the direction of the match completely with a chip shot nearly 50-feet long from the rough. Still, it proved insufficient to tip the scales in New York’s favor.
As the battle unfolded, Atlanta’s grit and game plan shined through, narrowly securing victory against their New York opponents. Atlanta’s electrifying comeback capped their 6-5 victory and furthered their standings as daunting playoff contenders, with the curve ball to come.
