New York Golf Club (NYGC) and Atlanta Drive Golf Club (Atlanta Drive GC) are both preparing to go head to head in friendly golf rivalry. They’re hoping to pay back their early 4-0 shutout loss from January 21, a first-ever historic first for TGL. With Monday’s action still to come, both teams will be announcing their final lineups soon. This introduction makes things even more interesting going into the expected rematch! The stage is thus prepared for what should be an epic showdown at the SoFi Center, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It’s a showdown between two titans that is set to open up a best-of-three finals in the inaugural TGL season!
NYGC has made a stellar run to the finals. They’ve really thrived in the alternate-shot format, earning a league-best 17 points and finishing T-2nd in TGL. Their success is mostly owed to their dominance in the triples event. Atlanta Drive GC has crushed it in singles matches, dominating the league with a league-best 23 points.
In their quest for redemption, NYGC aims to secure a few crucial points in the triples competition to create a buffer before heading into singles. In a competition with such few points available, triples are often the key. These players will provide NYGC the depth needed to counter Atlanta Drive GC’s singles powerhouse.
Each team starts off a TGL match with three Hammers. These tactical tools increase a hole’s value by one point each time they are employed. This strategic factor might prove decisive in what will undoubtedly be a historic showdown. During their semifinal match, Atlanta Drive GC put on a putting clinic. To NYGC’s credit, they were able to produce just under 65 feet of total made putts to NYST’s dismal 15 feet.
NYGC have returned to action with a vengeance, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches. They come out of that stretch with a league-best 3-0-1 record, putting their two early losses in the rearview mirror. The squad’s resilience in coming back from adversity is a strong indication they’re ready for the grand finals.
The stakes are seriously high on the SoFi Cup! The champion will take home a remarkable $9 million from the $21 million season-long purse, with the second place finisher doing just fine, taking home $4.5 million. That financial incentive includes a great deal of prestige that raises this already competitive battle to new heights.
Xander Schauffele commented on the dynamics within the team:
"I don't think Pat's going to give me a whole lot of trash talking back, that's usually a one-way street when we're together. It's almost impossible not to hear Billy when you're out there. Billy will be the big one; don't let him get too fired up or he's going to run all over you."
Billy Horschel also shared his thoughts on his teammate:
"J.T. just is a really aggressive player, he's always pushing the pedal down, always trying to hit the great golf shot. He's an unbelievable iron player and when his iron play's on, which it's very rarely off, it's scary good. And then if the putter gets warm…"
Both teams look to be planning right now for this huge upcoming clash. All eyes will be on how NYGC is able to leverage their strengths and if Atlanta Drive GC can continue its shut-out power in singles matches. How strategic choices such as Hammers and putting skill play a deciding factor will be a key part of the story.
