Rodgers’ first public appearance since leaving the New York Jets, who cut him loose on March 12, Rodgers discusses other options for the first time. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was first with the news of his visit, underscoring the Steelers’ desire to land such an accomplished quarterback.
The visit was close to six hours long and even included a meeting with the Steelers’ coaching staff. Characterized as productive, the talks supposedly resulted in an understanding to keep lines of communication established between Rodgers and the front office. Rodgers is clearly making the right choice by taking his time. At the same time, football insiders report that Steelers’ ownership is seriously interested in bringing him aboard.
Rodgers just recently emerged as a potential option for the Steelers almost two weeks ago. This took place during the league’s private negotiating period that preceded free agency’s official start. Both the Steelers and New York Giants have extended Rodgers offers. Just like that, the Minnesota Vikings are in the mix. Interestingly, sources say the Vikings are preparing to announce J.J. McCarthy as their starting QB. Whether by design or just coincidence, this ruling would seriously limit their possibilities of pursuing Rodgers.
Additionally, the Steelers’ significant interest in landing Rodgers certainly indicates their strong desire to bulk up the quarterback depth chart. Despite his age, with all of his experience and accolades, Rodgers would still provide great leadership and skill to any team he signs with.
