Ja'Marr Chase has secured a landmark contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, marking a significant milestone in his career. The deal, finalized on Tuesday at Paycor Stadium, carries the highest average annual salary for a non-quarterback in league history, valued at $161 million and extending through 2029. This negotiation led to Chase skipping all of training camp in 2024. The star wide receiver, who was the No. 5 pick in 2021, has been pivotal for the Bengals, contributing to their consecutive AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance.
Chase's remarkable achievements include being a four-time Pro Bowl selection and making the All-Pro team in 2024. His influence on the field alongside teammate Tee Higgins has been crucial over the past four seasons. As part of his new contract negotiations, Chase emphasized the importance of ensuring progress on a deal between Higgins and the Bengals, underscoring the significance of their partnership.
"Signing us together, that's the whole goal," said Ja'Marr Chase.
The announcement at Paycor Stadium was made by Bengals coach Zac Taylor, highlighting the successful conclusion of negotiations that were facilitated by recent developments in the league's financial landscape. The signing of Myles Garrett's contract with the Cleveland Browns, which exceeded $40 million annually, paved the way for Chase's historic deal. The finalization of Chase's contract came just four days after Garrett's agreement was signed.
Chase acknowledged the vital role played by his quarterback, Joe Burrow, in securing this new deal. Burrow's support was a key factor in Chase's decision to commit to the Bengals for the foreseeable future. The wide receiver's leadership and performance have been instrumental in the team's resurgence, as they strive to remain competitive at the highest levels of the NFL.
"For us to push this team, push each other as far as we can go. The one goal is to be the best in the AFC first. That's going to give us the shot to get to the Super Bowl. If we win that first, then we're going to take the next step," added Chase.
Chase's collaboration with Tee Higgins continues to be a focal point for the Bengals' strategy. Higgins expressed his appreciation for Burrow's endorsement of their continued presence on the team.
"A guy like him wanting guys like us to stick around and play with him for the next four years, I feel like it definitely helps," said Tee Higgins.
