Iga Świątek, a five-time grand slam champion, is preparing to compete in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday. This appearance comes after a turbulent period in her career that included a one-month doping suspension and public scrutiny over her behavior at the Indian Wells tournament. Świątek, who claimed victory at the Miami Open in 2022, is seeking to return to her winning form following the recent setbacks.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) imposed a suspension on Świątek last year after she tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication. The ITIA concluded that the positive test was non-intentional, attributing it to contamination from non-prescription melatonin she was taking for jet lag and sleep issues. Despite the clarification, the suspension forced Świątek to miss three tournaments and left her grappling with the impact.
“That’s not a healthy standard – especially considering that just six months ago, I felt my career was hanging by a thread, spent three weeks crying daily, and didn’t want to step on the court.”
Since her return to the court, Świątek has yet to secure a title, although she reached the semifinals in three of her past four tournaments, including the Australian Open. Her performance at Indian Wells drew attention for reasons beyond her skills. During a semifinal defeat, Świątek vented her frustration by hitting a ball thrown by a ball boy hard into the ground, which resulted in boos and jeers from the crowd.
“I immediately apologized to the ball boy, we made eye contact, and nodded to each other when I expressed regret that it happened near him. I’ve seen many players bounce balls in frustration, and frankly, I didn’t expect such harsh judgments.”
Świątek acknowledged that she is processing the repercussions of the positive test and subsequent suspension while striving to focus on her career. She expressed her desire to inspire fans and young athletes through her journey.
“But perhaps a few people who genuinely want to understand what I’m experiencing will understand this … I know I’ll never please everyone. I walk my own path. I strive to bring joy to fans watching my matches and to inspire kids by setting a positive example.”
