Nate Hobbs has inked a four-year, $48 million contract with the Green Bay Packers during the initial week of NFL free agency, marking a significant addition to the team’s secondary lineup. Having played 51 out of a possible 68 regular-season games over four seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, Hobbs brings both experience and potential to Green Bay.
Hobbs plans to keep a memorable image from his time with the Raiders prominently displayed—a photograph from the 2022 season where he faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. The picture captures Hobbs, donning a cast on his left hand, confronting Mahomes. In a light-hearted moment, Hobbs referred to Mahomes as "The quarterback… whatever his name is," indicating the confidence and humor he brings to the field.
With the Raiders, Hobbs primarily operated in the slot, but with the Packers, he is set to explore new opportunities. The team intends to test his skills on the perimeter, potentially pairing him with Keisean Nixon. Interestingly, Hobbs and Nixon have shared the field before during Hobbs' rookie year in 2021 with the Raiders.
The 2022 season saw Hobbs logging more snaps on the outside than in the slot, a departure from his usual role. However, his journey has not been devoid of challenges. Injuries have periodically sidelined him throughout his career, including a stretch during which he was placed on injured reserve and missed six games.
Despite these setbacks, Hobbs maintains a positive outlook on his adaptability within the Packers' defensive scheme. His assurance in handling various roles is evident.
"We'll get to that. I'm willing to do whatever the team needs me to do. I'm a dog, so I'm going to step wherever I step. If I step at nickel, if I step at corner, if they need me to play safety, goddamn it, I'll play safety." – Nate Hobbs
Although Hobbs is only 40% sure of his capability to perform effectively on the outside, his versatility remains a valuable asset for the Packers as they look to strengthen their cornerback position further. The team is expected to continue exploring additional options either through remaining free agents or the upcoming draft.
Moreover, ongoing discussions suggest that the Packers are attempting to trade Jaire Alexander, according to sources close to both the team and the player. This potential move could open up further opportunities for Hobbs and others within the secondary.
Hobbs sees similarities between himself and Nixon, hinting at a promising partnership on the field. As both players reunite in Green Bay, they aim to form a formidable duo capable of elevating the team's defensive performance.
