Mike Williams is set to reunite with the Los Angeles Chargers after signing a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. The Chargers announced the agreement on Wednesday night, marking Williams’ return after spending last season with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers. Having been originally drafted by the Chargers with the seventh pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Williams spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the team.
Williams' journey over the past year was tumultuous. He left the Chargers last offseason to join the Jets as a free agent. However, his time in New York proved challenging, as he managed only 12 catches on 21 targets for 166 yards across nine games. The Jets then traded Williams to the Pittsburgh Steelers at the trade deadline, receiving a fifth-round draft pick in return.
Throughout his career, Williams has shown flashes of brilliance. In 2019, he led the NFL with an impressive 20.4 yards per reception. Additionally, he has recorded two seasons surpassing 1,000 receiving yards. However, durability has been a concern for Williams, as he recently tore an ACL in Week 3 of the 2023 season and missed multiple games due to injuries in previous seasons.
Now back with the Chargers, Williams reunites with quarterback Justin Herbert. The Chargers' receiving lineup also features Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston, promising a strong offensive unit. Despite previous setbacks, Williams' return adds depth and experience to the Chargers' roster.
Williams' NFL career has been notable for its highs and lows. Over eight years, he has amassed 32 touchdown catches and 5,104 receiving yards on 330 receptions. His college football tenure at Clemson further showcased his potential, leading to his high draft selection in 2017.
