The New England Patriots have released veteran center David Andrews, marking the end of an era for the team. Andrews, who joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2015, played an integral role in the team's success over the years. He appeared in 124 regular-season games and 12 playoff games, starting in nearly all of them. The announcement came on Thursday, with Andrews having been placed on injured reserve earlier this season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
David Andrews' journey with the Patriots began unexpectedly, as he entered the NFL without being drafted. His perseverance and skill quickly earned him a spot as a starting center. Throughout his tenure, Andrews became a linchpin of the Patriots' offensive line, starting in 121 regular-season games and 10 playoff games. His exceptional performance earned him a place on the Patriots' 2010s All-Decade Team.
The 2023 season saw Andrews start the first four games before a shoulder injury sidelined him. The injury required surgery, and he has since been undergoing rehabilitation for the past five months. Despite his dedicated efforts to return to play, Andrews faced challenges in his recovery.
"I did everything I could to try to play [in 2024], and it didn't go well," David Andrews stated regarding his attempts to overcome the injury.
In addition to his on-field contributions, Andrews was recognized for his community service, receiving the Ron Burton Community Service Award in 2020. His impact extended beyond the football field, as he was admired for his leadership and commitment both within the team and in the community.
Andrews was entering the final year of his contract in 2025 and was scheduled to earn a base salary of $4 million. However, his release from the team brings an end to his long-standing tenure with the Patriots. This decision comes as the team looks ahead and makes strategic changes for future seasons.
"David Andrews' career success is a shining example of what every NFL prospect should strive to achieve," Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, remarked, highlighting Andrews' remarkable career.
As Andrews continues his rehabilitation, his future in the NFL remains uncertain. However, his legacy with the Patriots is firmly established, leaving a lasting impact on both the team and its fans.
