Chargers Part Ways with Running Back Gus Edwards

The Los Angeles Chargers have informed running back Gus Edwards of his impending release, sources reveal. Edwards, who had joined the team last offseason, struggled to make an impact during the 2024 season. Initially splitting the workload with running back J.K. Dobbins, Edwards' performance was hindered by injuries and inconsistent play.

Edwards' tenure with the Chargers was marred by ankle injuries, causing him to miss six crucial games. As a result, he participated in only 11 games, marking the second fewest appearances of his career. The Chargers' running game often faltered, with the team surpassing 100 rushing yards in only four contests. Notably, during a victory over the Denver Broncos, quarterback Justin Herbert contributed 24 yards on the ground, highlighting the struggles in the backfield.

Despite coming off a stellar season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, where he achieved career highs in rushing yards, touchdowns, and yards from scrimmage, Edwards could not replicate that success in Los Angeles. He concluded the season with a disappointing 365 rushing yards and four touchdowns, both career lows. At 30 years old in April, Edwards' future in the NFL remains uncertain.

The Chargers had signed Edwards to a two-year deal with hopes of bolstering their running game. However, his limited role as a backup failed to meet expectations. By releasing him, the Chargers will save $3.125 million against the salary cap, providing them with additional flexibility for future roster moves.
