Manchester United and Arsenal ended their Premier League clash in a 1-1 stalemate at Old Trafford on Sunday. Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead with a contentious free-kick goal, only for Declan Rice to equalize for Arsenal. Despite dominating the second half and creating several scoring opportunities, United could not secure a victory. The home fans, however, showed their support, cheering the players off the field with optimism for upcoming challenges.
Gary Neville, a former United player, remarked that the performance against Arsenal is likely to boost confidence for their crucial Europa League last-16 second leg against Real Sociedad on Thursday. Although United remain entrenched in the lower half of the Premier League table, they continue to pursue silverware and a return to the Champions League through the Europa League. With the first leg against Sociedad ending 1-1 in Spain, United’s hopes rest heavily on Thursday’s encounter.
Neville noted that United fans might accept their team playing defensively if they can still pose an offensive threat. He observed that the team's performance in the second half was significantly improved, reflecting a higher expected goals (xG) than Arsenal. Neville stated,
"United have got a higher xG [expected goals] than Arsenal and that doesn't surprise me. They didn't score in the second half but I thought the performance was so much better."
David Raya, Arsenal's goalkeeper, delivered a stellar performance with several crucial saves, denying United a deserved winner. Rasmus Hojlund, meanwhile, showcased his potential but highlighted his need for more sharpness in front of goal. Despite these challenges, United manager Ruben Amorim expressed satisfaction with his team's second-half efforts.
Neville commented on the current state of United at Old Trafford, saying,
"United don't like playing [at Old Trafford] at the moment. It's a struggle for them. There's a weight on their shoulders that exists that means they find it difficult."
As United prepares for their critical match against Real Sociedad, they are aware of the formidable challenge ahead. The Spanish side has proven to be resilient, and United must bring their best game to advance further in the Europa League. Amorim will undoubtedly look to build on the positives from Sunday's performance as his team aims to overcome Sociedad’s resistance.
