Rudy Gobert made a triumphant return to the Minnesota Timberwolves lineup, helping the team secure a 141-124 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. Gobert, who had been sidelined for ten games due to a lower back injury, showcased his prowess with 16 points and eight rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. This performance marked the Timberwolves' fifth consecutive win and their highest-scoring game of the season.
In his third year with the Minnesota Timberwolves, the four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year award winner was reinserted into the team's most common starting lineup. Alongside Gobert, the lineup featured Mike Conley and Anthony Edwards at guard and Jaden McDaniels and Julius Randle at forward. Gobert's return meant that Naz Reid, who had averaged 18.1 points and 9.7 rebounds as a starter in Gobert's absence, returned to a reserve role.
Gobert's return also highlighted a missed opportunity to face fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, who will remain out for the rest of the season. Despite this, Gobert's performance was notable; he is averaging 11.1 points per game this season, marking his lowest scoring average in a decade.
"No, it was great. It was fun. When the ball is moving like that and the mindset is how it was tonight, I think we have a very powerful team." – Rudy Gobert
Gobert expressed satisfaction with his return and the team's effort in their victory against the Spurs. The Timberwolves demonstrated their offensive capabilities, with ball movement and teamwork taking center stage.
