Steven Alker triumphed at the Cologuard Classic on Sunday, securing his ninth PGA Tour Champions title. Held at the scenic La Paloma Country Club, the tournament concluded with a dramatic playoff against Jason Caron. Alker delivered a decisive 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole, making history as the first playoff winner in the event's 11-year history.
The competition was intense from the outset, with Alker and Caron both finishing at 12-under 201 after shooting impressive 5-under 66 rounds. Jason Caron, the head pro at Mill River in Oyster Bay, New York, was seeking his first win in 13 career starts on the 50-and-over tour. Despite a commendable performance, Caron fell short in the playoff, ultimately tying for third at 11 under with fellow Australian Rod Pampling.
Greg Chalmers narrowly missed the opportunity to join the playoff. His 8-foot birdie attempt on the 18th hole slid past, leaving him out of contention. Chalmers' near miss underscored the competitive nature of the tournament, which saw several top players vying for victory.
Ernie Els, another prominent figure in the tournament, finished fifth with a score of 10 under after carding a 70. Despite not clinching the title, Els maintained his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, with Alker moving into second place following his victory.
The Cologuard Classic showcased high-level golf and strategic play, with each participant bringing their A-game to the green. Alker's win not only added another title to his illustrious career but also highlighted his skill and composure under pressure. His victory in Tucson marks a significant milestone in his career as he continues to cement his legacy on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.
