Karl Vilips captured his maiden PGA Tour title in a thrilling finale at the Puerto Rico Open, overcoming a formidable challenge from Denmark's Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen. The 23-year-old Australian golfer demonstrated composure and resilience, especially after a bogey on the 12th hole, to secure a three-shot victory. Vilips, who spent one year on the Korn Ferry Tour, showcased his mettle by birdieing the final hole, sealing his win with a six-foot putt.
Neergaard-Petersen delivered a stunning performance, birdieing six consecutive holes to start the back nine and closing with a remarkable 63. Playing on a commissioner's exemption for international players, Neergaard-Petersen's runner-up finish earns him an entry into the Valspar Championship in two weeks. Reflecting on his round, he remarked:
"When I made the putt on the 15th is when I thought if I can post a good number, we'll see."
Despite the pressure from Neergaard-Petersen, Vilips maintained his calm demeanor. After faltering with a bogey on the 12th hole, he swiftly regained control with birdies on the subsequent three holes. This included an impressive pitch on the par-5 14th that helped him retake the lead. Steven Fisk joined Vilips in a tie for fourth place, while Joseph Bramlett, another Stanford alum, finished third with a score of 68.
Vilips' victory holds significant implications for his career. Besides the $720,000 prize money, he has earned a spot in The Players Championship next week and the PGA Championship in May. Additionally, this win grants him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Notably, Vilips is the first PGA Tour winner to don the new "Sun Day Red" brand associated with Tiger Woods.
Expressing his joy at the achievement, Vilips reflected on his journey:
"It's a dream come true for me and my dad."
"This is what we dreamed of as a kid."
