Wayne Madsen has been re-appointed as the captain of Derbyshire's County Championship side, marking his return to the leadership role after a nine-year hiatus. Madsen, who previously captained the team to victory in the Division Two title and promotion in 2012, is set to replace David Lloyd. Lloyd decided to step down from the position to concentrate more on his personal performance.
The decision comes as Derbyshire seeks to rebuild after a challenging season. Last year, the team finished at the bottom of the Second Division table, having secured just one win. Additionally, they were unable to advance beyond the group stages in both the One-Day Cup and T20 Blast competitions. Madsen's appointment is seen as a strategic move to leverage his extensive experience and previous success as captain to rejuvenate the team's performance.
Madsen's remarkable career with Derbyshire is highlighted by his impressive statistics. He has accumulated 14,601 first-class runs, placing him ninth in the club's history. Across all formats, he boasts 22,271 runs, making him the club's second highest scorer. The club regards Madsen as their "greatest modern-day player," a testament to his skill and consistent contributions over the years.
"It's a real privilege to captain Derbyshire again," Madsen expressed, highlighting his enthusiasm for taking on the leadership role once more.
Mickey Arthur, an influential figure within the club, praised Madsen's experience and leadership qualities.
