The Sacramento Kings showcased their dominance in a commanding 127-109 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night. The game marked De'Aaron Fox's first return to Sacramento since being traded, and it was an evening filled with mixed emotions and performances. George Strait's "All My Ex's Live in Texas" played during the Spurs' player introductions, setting the tone for the eventful night. Despite the crowd's boos each time Fox touched the ball, he managed to score a team-high 16 points. However, his shooting was inconsistent, going 6-of-17 from the field and missing all six of his three-point attempts.
Fox's performance was uneven throughout the game, but he managed to make an impact in the second half. He scored 10 of his 16 points during this period, although his initial attempts saw him miss four consecutive shots in the first quarter. San Antonio led 26-20 at the end of the first frame but couldn't maintain the momentum. It was the fourth instance this season that Fox failed to make a three-pointer after attempting at least six shots from deep range.
Despite the boos, the Sacramento crowd showed respect during a first-quarter timeout when a tribute video for Fox played. The audience responded with a standing ovation, acknowledging his contributions during his time with the Kings.
"I thought he handled it with class," said Mitch Johnson, reflecting on Fox's return.
"I thought he handled it like a professional, which is what we expected him to do. I thought he got into the flow as the game went on. He missed a lot of shots he usually makes. But he got to that normal kind of bounce and pep in his step. We saw him create advantages everywhere on the floor. As the game just became basketball at some point, it was just nice to see him out there playing and trusting his instincts." – Mitch Johnson
While Fox had a challenging night, Zach LaVine shone brightly for Sacramento. He delivered an impressive 36-point performance, leading the Kings to their fifth win in six games. LaVine's shooting was stellar, hitting 7-of-11 from beyond the arc, and adding eight assists, four rebounds, and a steal to his stat sheet. His contribution helped build a significant 27-point advantage for Sacramento in the second half, marking the largest lead of the game.
The Kings dominated across various facets of play, including a notable 51-36 edge in rebounds. The Spurs struggled to close the gap throughout the match, underscoring that this was not one of their closely contested games against Sacramento.
De'Aaron Fox acknowledged LaVine's prowess after the game.
"Everybody in the league knows what Zach can do," stated Fox.
