Igor Kokoskov has carved out a significant niche in the NBA, becoming a trailblazer as the first non-American full-time assistant coach when the Los Angeles Clippers hired him in 2000. With an impressive career spanning 19 years, Kokoskov has gathered vast experience by coaching various teams across the league. In 2023, he joined Quin Snyder's coaching staff in Atlanta, further solidifying his reputation as a highly experienced assistant coach.
Kokoskov's extensive coaching resume includes stints with multiple NBA teams such as Brooklyn, Dallas, Sacramento, Phoenix, Utah, Cleveland, Detroit, and his initial team, the Los Angeles Clippers. Known for his tactical acumen and leadership abilities, Kokoskov has also served in acting head coaching capacities. His sole season as a head coach came with the Phoenix Suns during the 2018-19 season, where he posted a 19-63 record before being dismissed at the season's end.
On Thursday night, Quin Snyder returned to the bench for the Atlanta Hawks' game against the Indiana Pacers after a brief illness. Snyder missed one game due to flu-like symptoms during which Kokoskov stepped up as the acting head coach. Despite the team's 127-121 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night, Kokoskov's leadership was highlighted by Snyder.
"His level of experience makes you very comfortable in those situations." – Quin Snyder
Kokoskov's journey from Serbia to becoming a respected figure in NBA circles is a testament to both his dedication and skill. His ability to adapt and thrive in various coaching roles underscores his unique position within the league. Quin Snyder echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Kokoskov's invaluable contributions to the coaching staff.
"We have a great staff with a lot of people who are really talented. His experience, I think for an assistant in the league is very unique." – Quin Snyder
