The decision to release him is expected to provide significant financial relief to the Seahawks' salary cap.
George Fant's release will save the Seahawks $3.8 million in cap space, although the team will incur $1.85 million in dead money. Fant was poised to make a non-guaranteed $3.8 million in 2025, making this move financially prudent for the organization.
Similarly, Roy Robertson-Harris, who was scheduled to make a non-guaranteed $6.6 million in 2025, has also been released. This decision contributes another $6.6 million to the Seahawks' savings, helping the team align better with their financial goals.
Rayshawn Jenkins' release further aids the Seahawks' cap situation by saving $5.28 million, despite a hit of $2.5 million in dead money. Jenkins was on track to earn a non-guaranteed $5.4 million in 2025, making his release another calculated measure in the team's financial planning.
Before these cuts, the Seahawks found themselves approximately $6.8 million over the 2025 spending limit. With these adjustments, they are now in a better position to navigate the financial landscape of the league. However, more roster moves are anticipated as the team approaches the start of free agency next week.
Among the priorities for the Seahawks is the extension of quarterback Geno Smith's contract. Currently, Smith's contract carries a substantial $44.5 million cap charge. The team aims to negotiate an extension that would lower this figure and provide additional financial flexibility.
