Emma Raducanu encountered a distressing situation during her match against Karolína Muchová at the Dubai Tennis Championships, causing significant concern. Early in the second-round match, an incident unfolded involving a man displaying "fixated behavior" towards Raducanu, as described by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). This unsettling experience left Raducanu visibly distressed, prompting her to seek refuge behind the umpire's chair.
Unable to maintain her focus, Raducanu struggled to see the ball through tears and admitted that she could barely breathe.
“I literally couldn’t see the ball through tears. I could barely breathe. I was like, ‘I need to just take a breather,’” – Emma Raducanu
The unnerving episode occurred early in the match, but its impact on Raducanu was profound. The man, who had been identified at previous tournaments in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, has since faced consequences. The Dubai government issued a formal restraining order against him and banned him from future tournaments.
In response to the incident, Raducanu took a week off to recuperate. Reflecting on the occurrence, she emphasized the importance of learning from it and taking proactive measures.
“Since that incident, I have definitely got increased attention and greater security,” – Emma Raducanu
“All we can do is look at what happened and react to it in a better way, in a more positive way, rather than looking back and blaming the situation.” – Emma Raducanu
Raducanu's commitment to ensuring her safety has reshaped her approach to attending tournaments. She has implemented precautions to prevent similar situations from arising again.
“Now, it is being dealt with better, so for me that’s important. I’m always now very aware and not necessarily doing things on my own any more. I’m always with someone and always being watched.” – Emma Raducanu
Despite initial hesitations about competing at Indian Wells so soon after the incident, Raducanu decided to participate. Her return marks her first tournament appearance since the unsettling experience in Dubai.
“I’m very happy to be in Indian Wells, it’s my favorite tournament outside of the slams,” – Emma Raducanu
