The Mavericks' offensive rating suffers significantly without Irving, plummeting by more than eight points per 100 possessions. This setback is further magnified by the absence of centers Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II, along with a short-term injury to forward P.J. Washington. Despite having a 3.5-game cushion for the final play-in spot, Dallas must contend with these challenges as they attempt to secure their playoff position.
Historically, only two of the eight teams that finished 10th in the play-in tournament format have managed to avoid elimination in their opening games. The Mavericks have a dismal minus-8.5 point differential in 10 games this season without Irving and Luka Doncic, highlighting the importance of Irving's presence on the court. Without him, Dallas's chances of finishing in the top six dwindle to less than 1% according to simulations.
Looking at potential solutions, the Mavericks may need to consider trading one of their centers for a ball handler to supplement Irving's role. However, financial constraints pose a significant hurdle. The team is unlikely to have access to its mid-level exception to add free agents for more than the minimum salary, limiting their options for roster enhancements.
While the Mavericks grapple with these obstacles, they also face competition from teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, who are trending in a positive direction outside the West play-in spots. Despite having a challenging schedule ahead, with four remaining games against the league's top three teams—including trips to the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder—the Blazers could find themselves in contention if they manage to stay competitive through March. Their April schedule appears more favorable, potentially giving them an opportunity to gain ground.
Conversely, the Mavericks must capitalize on their current position and address their roster deficiencies promptly. The absence of key players like Irving and Doncic underscores the need for strategic adjustments and possibly exploring trade opportunities to bolster their lineup. As they await Irving's reevaluation, Dallas's path to the playoffs remains uncertain.
