Stafford’s Future with the Rams: A Seasoned Quarterback’s Journey

Matthew Stafford
is poised to enter his 17th season in the NFL, marking his fifth year with the Los Angeles Rams. In March 2022, Stafford extended his commitment to the Rams, agreeing to a contract extension that still has two seasons remaining. However, recent developments have seen the Rams allowing Stafford’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, to explore the quarterback market, assessing his client’s value among other teams.

In the previous season, Stafford demonstrated his enduring skills by completing 65.8% of his passes for a total of 3,762 yards over 16 games. He accumulated 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions, placing him as a pivotal player for the Rams. Looking ahead to 2025, the Rams' quarterback roster includes Stafford and Stetson Bennett, highlighting the veteran's continued importance to the team.

Rams coach Sean McVay expressed his confidence in Stafford's future with the team, dismissing any notions of his departure.

"That was never something that I ever thought would occur." – Sean McVay

McVay also indicated a willingness to bring back Jimmy Garoppolo as a backup for Stafford. He acknowledged that Stafford has "earned the right" to garner interest from other teams but remains committed to retaining him as a cornerstone of the Rams' lineup.

Contract discussions regarding Stafford have been ongoing, with McVay noting the progress made over recent negotiations.

"Here's the positive: Last year it took about seven months," – Sean McVay

Stafford's revised contract came on the heels of his agent being granted permission to explore external opportunities, a move that ultimately led to a mutually satisfactory agreement.

"And I think, fortunately, we were able to come to a compromise and a conclusion that everybody feels really good about, and I think it's a great reflection of him and our group." – Sean McVay

The Rams are in a position to negotiate with Stafford for roughly three weeks this year. McVay anticipates further discussions regarding Stafford's contract next year, potentially spanning two or three days—a significant reduction compared to previous negotiation periods.

"This year, about three weeks. So maybe it'll be about two, three days next year if we have to do this." – Sean McVay
