The Phoenix Suns' challenging season took another hit on Sunday night as they fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves, further dimming their playoff hopes. Despite being at full strength, the Suns were routed on their home court, losing 110-95. This defeat places them four games behind the Dallas Mavericks for the final spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament, exacerbating their struggles with a 20-31 record since November 13.
The Timberwolves capitalized on the Suns' lackluster performance, tying a season-high with 22 turnovers. Those turnovers proved costly, as Minnesota scored a season-high 40 points off them. Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal contributed to this downfall by combining for 14 of the turnovers. The Suns' defensive efforts appeared questionable at times, especially against Donte DiVincenzo, who torched them with eight 3-pointers.
"We didn't play up to our standards at all," said Kevin Durant.
The Suns had managed to lead 51-49 at halftime, but the Timberwolves rallied in the third quarter, establishing an 83-72 lead going into the fourth. Scattered boos from the home crowd reflected their disappointment as Phoenix lost for the 11th time in 14 games, dropping to a 28-33 record for the season. This loss marked Minnesota's sweep of all three regular-season meetings against Phoenix this year.
Injuries have plagued the Suns throughout the season, affecting their performance. However, the absence of injuries on Sunday night didn't translate into success on the court. The Suns' roster, featuring highly-paid and accomplished players like Durant, Booker, and Beal, has not lived up to expectations.
"We embarrassed the fans and we embarrassed ourselves the way we played. I want us to be better," Durant expressed candidly.
The team's head coach, Mike Budenholzer, emphasized the urgency of turning things around.
"We've got to go on a run, but it's got to start," he stated.
