Venus Williams, a tennis icon with a storied career, has opted not to accept a wild card invitation to the upcoming BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 2 to March 16, 2024. This decision marks another chapter in Williams' journey, as it will be her first absence from the event since her participation in 1994.
Williams has enjoyed a glittering career, amassing seven Grand Slam singles titles, alongside 14 doubles Grand Slam titles and two mixed-doubles titles. Despite her illustrious achievements, she has faced significant challenges in recent years. The athlete has not won a match on tour since August 2023 and currently holds a ranking of 974th in the world due to a series of injuries.
The invitation to compete at Indian Wells would have marked Williams' return to professional tennis since her first-round exit at the Miami Open in March 2024. However, tournament director Tommy Haas announced that Williams has chosen to decline the wild card offer. Haas conveyed his support, stating, “Our team has been informed that Venus is not accepting the wild card this year. We wish Venus all the best and hope to see her back in Indian Wells in the future.”
In a recent appearance on the 'Tennis Weekly' podcast, Williams confirmed her decision, stating, “I'm not playing. I'm going to be overseas. I'm not gonna be here.” This announcement comes as a disappointment to fans who have followed her remarkable career.
Williams has had a complex history with the Indian Wells tournament. After experiencing racist abuse during her matches and witnessing her sister Serena being booed by the crowd, she boycotted the event from 2002 until 2016. Since then, she has made sporadic appearances but has not been able to reclaim her past form.
Over the years, Williams has reached the semifinals of the tournament on three occasions. Her tenacity and skill on the court have earned her a dedicated fan base, and many had hoped for her return to the venue where she first competed as a young athlete.
