The Washington Commanders are entering a pivotal offseason, equipped with the third-most salary cap space in the NFL. This financial flexibility positions them to make significant roster changes as they face the challenge of having 28 unrestricted free agents. Tied with the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Chargers for the fewest players signed this offseason, Washington is poised for a busy period in free agency.
The team plans to create an additional $16.3 million in cap space by parting ways with defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, who recently received permission to seek a trade. The draft pick compensation for Allen remains uncertain, adding complexity to the team's offseason strategy. Meanwhile, the Commanders' offense, which ranked fifth in scoring and seventh in yards last season, presents an opportunity to enhance their roster with impactful additions.
The Commanders are considering several potential acquisitions to bolster their lineup. Myles Garrett, the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, could significantly enhance Washington's defense. Known for his prowess as a first-team All-Pro at defensive end for four of the past five years, Garrett would provide a much-needed boost.
Another potential target is Josh Sweat, an end proficient in both run defense and pass rushing. Sweat averaged 8.25 sacks over the past four seasons and achieved a run stop win rate of 29% last season. With upcoming free agents Clelin Ferrell and Dante Fowler Jr., Washington is keen on strengthening its defensive end positions.
On the offensive front, Washington seeks a veteran receiver to complement Terry McLaurin and Luke McCaffrey, the only receivers signed through 2025. Cooper Kupp and Deebo Samuel emerge as prime candidates to fill this role. The Commanders' general manager, Adam Peters, emphasized the importance of building through the draft, with seven picks in the upcoming draft.
"We'll be active in free agency because we have to be just to field the team," – Adam Peters
Peters acknowledges that Washington will also focus on retaining some of their players from last season.
"But a lot of those we'll look to bring guys back we had last year." – Adam Peters
An NFC offensive coach commented on the impact of potential acquisitions, particularly Myles Garrett, in competing against divisional rivals like the Philadelphia Eagles.
"They would be able to compete better with Philly for sure" – NFC offensive coach
To maximize their competitive edge while quarterback Jayden Daniels is still on his rookie deal, an NFL offensive coach stressed the importance of strategic spending.
"Spend every dollar you can while Jayden is on a rookie deal." – NFL offensive coach
If opposing defenses focus on neutralizing McLaurin, adding another explosive offensive option becomes crucial.
"If they're trying to take away Terry," – NFL offensive coach
