Barry Ferguson Takes Reins at Rangers in Whirlwind Appointment

Barry Ferguson has been appointed as the new head coach of Rangers, following a surprise call that saw him accept the role within just five minutes. On Monday, the former player and club ambassador took on the position with enthusiasm and determination, aiming to make an immediate impact as he prepares for his first game against Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Ferguson, known for his illustrious playing career at Ibrox, expressed his surprise at being asked to lead the team. Despite not considering a return to management, he quickly accepted the offer, feeling ready for the challenge. His experience includes stints as manager at Clyde, Kelty Hearts, Alloa Athletic, and a caretaker role at Blackpool.

He wasted no time in assembling his coaching team, bringing back former players Neil McCann, Billy Dodds, and Allan McGregor. Ferguson emphasized their managerial experience and deep understanding of the club's expectations.

"Both Neil and Billy have experience of being managers at a good level," said Ferguson. "They've played for the club, alongside Allan, they know the expectations."

Ahead of his debut match as head coach, Ferguson has had only one training session with the team. However, he has already spoken with James Tavernier, whom he confirmed will remain as captain. Their conversation reinforced Ferguson's confidence in Tavernier's commitment.

"I had a good chat with him last night. It was good to get a good sit down with him. I looked him in the eyes and there's no doubt he will give me 100 per cent," Tavernier stated.

Tavernier acknowledged the team's recent struggles but noted a positive shift under Ferguson's leadership.

"I was at both games [home defeats]. I could see it was clearly a group low on confidence. My job is to pick that up and I've certainly got a response."

Ferguson faces the daunting task of revitalizing a squad that has been described as "bubbly around the place" yet needing direction. He is keenly aware of the high expectations that come with managing Rangers and is ready for the scrutiny that follows each game.

"Judge me at the end of the three months. I have no issue with that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm not taking this lightly," Ferguson remarked. "I would rather be judged come the end of the season but I also know I'll be judged game-to-game, that's the nature of the beast at Rangers."

Ferguson's respect for his players is evident, and he emphasizes creating a comfortable environment where they can thrive.

"It was important I got the right people in and also myself, it's important the players feel comfortable around good people and also good coaches," Ferguson added.

The new head coach's commitment to turning things around is clear. He aims to leverage his extensive experience, having won multiple titles and cups during his playing days at Rangers.
