Klay Thompson, currently averaging 13.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and two assists with the Mavericks, recently made headlines for a heartfelt gesture. Following a standout performance against the Los Angeles Lakers, where he scored 22 points and collected eight rebounds, Thompson met with Dr. Richard Ferkel. The renowned surgeon played a pivotal role in Thompson's return to basketball after he tore his Achilles in November 2020. In a touching moment in the Crypto.com tunnel, Thompson presented Dr. Ferkel with a championship ring, acknowledging his significant contribution to his comeback.
Thompson's journey back to the court was marked by considerable challenges. In addition to the Achilles tear during a 2020 workout, he had previously torn his ACL in his left knee during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. Despite these setbacks, Thompson made a triumphant return on January 9, 2022, against the Cleveland Cavaliers, scoring 17 points.
During his ninth season with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson faced the arduous task of recovering from severe injuries. His resilience and determination were evident as he worked tirelessly to regain his form. Averaging 20.4 points during the regular season, he was a key contributor just behind Stephen Curry, who led with 25.5 points per game.
The Warriors went on to clinch victory over the Boston Celtics in six games during the 2022 NBA Finals. This success allowed Thompson to pay tribute to those who supported him throughout his recovery journey. Dr. Ferkel was one of these individuals, having not only aided Thompson but also worked on Curry’s ankle in 2012 following multiple sprains.
Thompson's acknowledgment of Dr. Ferkel reflects his appreciation for the impact others have had on his career revival. The Washington State standout, who averaged 19 points per game in the postseason behind Curry's 27.4, continues to express gratitude as he competes on the West Coast.
