Cleveland Browns Part Ways with Safety Juan Thornhill

The Cleveland Browns have decided to release starting safety Juan Thornhill, as reported by the NFL Network. Despite having one year left on his three-year, $21 million contract, the team opted to make this strategic move. Thornhill's release will save the Browns $3.4 million in cap space, effective after June 1.

Thornhill joined the Browns during the 2023 offseason after an impressive stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was a second-round pick in the 2019 draft. In Kansas City, he achieved significant success, winning two Super Bowls over four seasons. Nevertheless, Thornhill's time in Cleveland was marred by injuries and inconsistencies. Over two seasons, he participated in only 11 games each year and registered a total of 103 tackles and four pass breakups.

In 2024, Thornhill's role began to diminish as he split time with fellow safety Ronnie Hickman. He played just 57% of the team's defensive snaps, marking a career low for the defensive back. This decline in participation may have influenced the Browns' decision to release him. His non-guaranteed $2.5 million base salary in 2025 also contributed to the decision.

The Browns have been proactive in managing their salary cap, and releasing Thornhill aligns with their financial strategy. The team seeks to maximize its cap space to improve its roster and remain competitive in the league.
