Bengals Part Ways with Defensive Tackle Sheldon Rankins

The Cincinnati Bengals have released defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins after just one season, the team announced on Friday. The decision comes as the Bengals aim to revamp a defense that struggled throughout the past season. Rankins, who had signed a two-year contract worth $24.5 million last offseason, was expected to bolster Cincinnati's defensive line but ultimately played in only seven games.

Rankins joined the Bengals with high expectations following a successful stint with the Houston Texans, where he recorded six sacks in the season before his move. However, injuries and illness marred his time in Cincinnati. A hamstring injury sidelined him for three games, and although he returned in Week 6, he was placed on the non-football injured reserve by Week 18 due to a viral illness. During his limited time on the field for the Bengals, Rankins managed just one sack and one quarterback hit.

Despite promising performances from key players like quarterback Joe Burrow, wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, and defensive end Trey Hendrickson, the Bengals finished the season with a 9-8 record and missed out on the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The team is now looking to make strategic changes, including releasing Rankins, to improve their prospects in the upcoming season.

Rankins' release will provide significant financial relief for the Bengals. By cutting ties with him before he was due a roster bonus on March 17, Cincinnati saves $9.6 million in salary cap space while incurring a $2 million dead money charge. This move allows the Bengals some flexibility as they plan their strategy for the upcoming season.

The 31-year-old Rankins had previously shown promise with standout performances, such as his three-sack game against his former team, the Houston Texans, in 2023. However, his time in Cincinnati did not meet expectations, partly due to unfortunate circumstances beyond his control.
