Angel Yin surged to a commanding lead in the LPGA Thailand tournament on Saturday with an impressive performance at Siam Country Club's Pattaya Old Course. The 26-year-old American golfer birdied three of her final four holes on the front nine, contributing to an outstanding 8-under 64 for the day. As a result, Yin holds a five-stroke advantage heading into the final round, positioning herself strongly in pursuit of her second LPGA title, following her triumph at the Buick LPGA Shanghai in 2023.
Yin, a two-time major runner-up, demonstrated her prowess and determination despite encountering her first bogey of the tournament on the ninth hole. Reflecting on her performance, she acknowledged some challenges but remained optimistic.
"Off the tee, I wasn't hitting it as well as the last two days, but I got away with some good lies and managed to capitalize on my opportunities." – Angel Yin
The LPGA Thailand is the inaugural event in the LPGA's Asian swing, which will continue in Singapore and China over the coming weeks. Yin has previously participated in this tournament four times, with her best finish being a shared third place in 2021. Her current performance suggests she may surpass that achievement.
Japan's Akie Iwai, who led after the first two rounds, shot a 71 and now holds second place with a three-round total of 21-under 195. Meanwhile, local stars Moriya Jutanugarn and Jeeno Thitikul each posted a 69 to sit at 201, trailing Iwai by just one stroke. Jutanugarn, known for finishing tied for second in 2018, and Thitikul, the lone runner-up in 2021, are both within striking distance of Iwai.
Yin's impressive play and strategic birdies have set her apart in this competitive field. As she heads into the final round, all eyes will be on her as she attempts to secure another victory on the LPGA tour.
