The Houston Rockets are poised for a crucial matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, marking the return of forward Jabari Smith Jr. to the court. Smith, who has been sidelined for 22 games due to a broken left hand, will make his comeback off the bench. His return comes as the Rockets navigate a series of injuries impacting their roster, including Fred VanVleet's ongoing absence due to a strained right ankle.
Jabari Smith Jr. sustained his injury on January 3 during a team shootaround, fracturing a metacarpal bone in his left hand. Before his injury, Smith had started every game of the season, averaging 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds. Despite his absence, the Rockets managed a respectable 12-10 record, with Amen Thompson stepping up to start in 20 of those games. Thompson's efforts were recognized as he was named the Western Conference's defensive player of the month in January.
The Timberwolves also face their own set of challenges, with Rudy Gobert missing his second consecutive game due to lower back spasms. However, they are set to welcome back Mike Conley, who is returning after a four-game hiatus caused by a sprained right index finger. Chris Finch, the Timberwolves coach, will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to strengthen his team’s performance.
Ime Udoka, the Rockets' head coach, commented on the team's approach to managing these challenging times.
"It was just a little bit of everything," – Ime Udoka
Smith’s return is timely as the Rockets face back-to-back games, starting with Friday night's clash against Minnesota and followed by a game in Utah on Saturday. The decision to bring Smith off the bench takes into account potential lineup adjustments for the consecutive games.
The Rockets have shown resilience during Smith’s absence, adapting to changes and maintaining competitive form. Smith's reintegration into the team adds depth and versatility, potentially boosting their offensive and defensive dynamics as they approach the latter part of the season.
