In a meticulously orchestrated operation, a gang of seven individuals stands accused of conducting a series of high-profile burglaries targeting some of America's most celebrated athletes. The thefts, estimated to total $3 million in stolen goods, took place over a three-month period in late 2022. The group, identified as Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, Bastian Orellano Morales, and Sergio Ortego Cabello, employed sophisticated methods to execute their crimes. Their audacious spree came to an abrupt halt when law enforcement apprehended them on an Ohio highway in January.
The gang's criminal activities were not random acts of theft but rather carefully planned operations. They specifically targeted athletes from the NFL, NBA, and NHL, including Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Joe Burrow, Bobby Portis Jr., and Luka Doncic. By using fake IDs to rent vehicles and cellphone tower data to track their victims' whereabouts, the group managed to breach the security of these high-profile figures' homes.
Their methodical approach involved breaking open safes and utilizing power tools to gain access to luxury items such as watches, jewelry, chains, and cash. The burglars even went so far as to document their ill-gotten gains by uploading photos to a secure Apple iCloud account. However, their technological savvy was no match for law enforcement, as the FBI successfully accessed the account with a search warrant.
"The individuals seem to be the alleged tip of the iceberg," stated the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Ohio.
The gang's downfall began with their arrest on an Ohio highway. Police intercepted their rental car after tracking it from Cincinnati and Jeffersonville, Indiana, before it was abandoned at a McDonald's in Miami. The use of a 20-page affidavit and cellphone tower data proved instrumental in pinpointing their activities and locations.
When officers questioned one of the suspects about their destination, the initial response was "Orlando," which was later changed to "New York." This inconsistency raised further suspicions and contributed to their capture.
"Go for it," was reportedly uttered by one of the burglars during the course of their criminal endeavors.
The gang's spree included a particularly lucrative haul on December 19 in Memphis, where they reportedly stole around $1 million worth of goods. Their bold tactics and high-stakes targets captured national attention, with victims hailing from prominent teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Milwaukee Bucks, and Dallas Mavericks.
As the investigation unfolded, the details of these crimes revealed a complex web of deceit and theft that spanned across multiple states. Law enforcement's ability to track the group's movements through technology and traditional investigative methods played a crucial role in dismantling their operations.
The gang members now face serious legal consequences. If convicted, they could each be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
