Jesse Madden, the grandson of the late iconic NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden, has been appointed as the offensive quality control coach for the Washington Commanders. This marks his first position in the National Football League. The Commanders have also hired Brian Schneider as an assistant special teams coach. Jesse Madden's new role is a significant step forward in his burgeoning football career, reflecting his deep-rooted connection to the sport through his family's storied legacy.
Jesse Madden's journey to the NFL has been shaped by a lifetime immersed in football culture. Growing up, he studied his grandfather’s famous Raiders teams, gaining invaluable insights into the game. During high school, he demonstrated his commitment by learning 1,600 plays and organizing informal workouts during the pandemic, exemplifying his dedication and work ethic.
"His work ethic is amazing. Even with nothing going on because of COVID, he practiced every day like he was going to play." – John Madden's grandfather
After high school, Jesse Madden spent four years at Michigan, starting as a quarterback before transitioning to a defensive back. His time at Michigan was highlighted by a memorable televised victory against Northern Illinois in 2021, which his grandfather witnessed three months before his passing on December 28, 2021.
In addition to his technical knowledge and field experience, Jesse Madden’s family ties to football run deep. John Madden was not only renowned for his coaching and broadcasting but also became a household name through beer commercials and the popular video game named after him. For Jesse, this connection is a natural part of his identity.
"For me, it's not crazy because it's all I've known my whole life," – Jesse Madden
Jesse Madden received the call about joining the Commanders while playing the "Madden" video game with his teammates, illustrating how intertwined his life is with the world of football. This opportunity comes just days before Michigan played Washington in the National Championship in 2024.
