In a significant development for the Dallas Cowboys, Brian Schottenheimer assumes the role of head coach and playcaller, ushering in a new era alongside quarterback Dak Prescott. The transition promises to bring fresh dynamics to the Cowboys' offense, with Schottenheimer's strategic inclinations and Prescott's proven capabilities at the forefront. While initial disagreements arose during practice, both Schottenheimer and Prescott quickly reached an understanding, strengthening their professional rapport. The duo is now poised to redefine the Cowboys' offensive strategies, with an emphasis on play-action plays, a technique that has brought Prescott considerable success in the past.
Prescott, who initially expressed frustration after being pulled from a play during practice, acknowledged that the conversation that followed was necessary.
"But that was a conversation that was very unpleasant on the front end, but it had to be addressed at some point or another, and it was, immediately after practice," said Prescott.
This incident paved the way for a deeper mutual appreciation between the quarterback and his coach.
"It was two grown men coming to an understanding and appreciating each other for the competitiveness and the standard. So [I'm] excited for things like that to grow, and not only me, but throughout every position on our team," Prescott added.
Schottenheimer brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Known for his run-first philosophy, his tenure as the Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator revealed a propensity for play-action, particularly with quarterback Russell Wilson. Under Schottenheimer's guidance, the Seahawks utilized play-action on 27% of dropbacks, ranking eighth in the league during his three-year stint. This approach aligns with Prescott's capabilities; since his rookie year, he ranks eighth in touchdown passes and yards when employing play-action strategies.
Prescott has already demonstrated his potential under different playcalling styles. With Kellen Moore as his playcaller, Prescott set franchise records, including an impressive 37 touchdown passes in 2022. Schottenheimer recognizes Prescott's potential to reach even greater heights.
"My vision for [Prescott] is he's one of the best," remarked Schottenheimer, underscoring his confidence in Prescott's abilities.
The quarterback has indeed made a significant impact on the team, a sentiment echoed by Schottenheimer himself.
"Dak and I have an incredible relationship, just like I have an incredible relationship with all these guys," Schottenheimer stated.
Their relationship began when Prescott introduced himself early on during Schottenheimer's tenure as a consultant in 2022. Schottenheimer primarily collaborated with then-defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, analyzing offensive tendencies of upcoming opponents. This initial connection laid the foundation for countless hours spent discussing football tactics and strategies. Both individuals are now committed to leveraging their strong rapport for the team's benefit.
Prescott, who is signed through 2028 alongside Schottenheimer, continues to exhibit strong leadership qualities. In 2023, he finished second in MVP voting after leading the NFL with 36 touchdown passes. Acknowledging Prescott's influence on the team, Schottenheimer is confident in their ability to push each other toward greatness.
"Dak and I know how to push each other's buttons. We know how to have hard conversations," Schottenheimer commented.
However, challenges remain. Last season, the Cowboys called play-action on only 18% of their dropbacks, ranking second lowest in the league. As Schottenheimer steps into his new role, increasing these numbers will likely be a priority. The coach believes in Prescott's capacity to execute elite-level football, indicating a potential shift toward more play-action plays in their game plans.
Currently, Prescott is rehabbing from surgery following a right hamstring avulsion sustained during a Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Despite this setback, both he and Schottenheimer remain optimistic about their future collaboration and its potential impact on the Cowboys' success.
