The Jacksonville Jaguars have shortlisted five candidates for their vacant general manager position. The finalists, none of whom have held a general manager role before, are set to participate in in-person interviews starting Wednesday. The Jaguars aim to fill the position by the end of the upcoming week, according to a league source. This decision will mark the beginning of a new era, with all three main decision-makers for the team being rookies in their respective positions.
Among the contenders is Josh Williams, currently the San Francisco 49ers' director of scouting and football operations. Williams has been an integral part of the 49ers' scouting department since 2011. James Gladstone, another finalist, serves as the Los Angeles Rams' director of scouting strategy. His strategic insights have been pivotal for the Rams’ recent success in player acquisition.
Ian Cunningham, presently the assistant general manager for the Chicago Bears, has also made the cut. His leadership and experience with the Bears are anticipated to bring fresh perspectives to the Jaguars' management team. Jon-Eric Sullivan, who has been with the Green Bay Packers since 2004, is another strong candidate. Currently serving as the Packers' VP of player personnel, Sullivan's extensive experience in football operations adds depth to his candidacy.
Ethan Waugh rounds out the list of finalists. Waugh is currently serving as the Jaguars' interim general manager after stepping in when the team parted ways with former GM Trent Baalke on January 22. His familiarity with the team's inner workings could give him a unique advantage in the selection process.
The selection of these five finalists emerges from an initial pool of ten candidates who were interviewed virtually. The Jaguars are keen on finalizing their choice soon, intending to have a new general manager in place to steer the team forward by the week's end.
