The New York Jets have decided to part ways with quarterback Aaron Rodgers following a challenging 2024 season. Despite a notable performance where Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, the Jets informed him of his release on Sunday, as reported by Fox Sports. This move allows Rodgers to explore new opportunities, as he becomes a free agent on March 13. The team plans to release him with a post-June 1 designation, which will save them $9.5 million in cap space.
Rodgers' current cap number stands at $23.5 million, but it is set to decrease to $14 million after June 2. The decision to move on from Rodgers comes after a season where the Jets struggled, finishing with a disappointing 5-12 record. Rodgers managed to win only six of his 18 starts, and the team ended up 3-7 in one-score games, failing to capitalize on crucial moments. These results contributed to the firing of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
In 2023, Rodgers made headlines by taking a voluntary $35 million pay cut to provide cap relief for the Jets. His commitment and leadership did not go unnoticed as he was voted the most inspirational player by his teammates. Owner Woody Johnson expressed his gratitude for Rodgers' time with the team, stating:
"His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career."
The decision to inform Rodgers of his release now aims to offer clarity for both parties involved. Coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey emphasized the importance of this timing:
"It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures."
During his tenure with the Jets, Rodgers faced challenges, including tearing his left Achilles on the fourth snap of his first game with the team. Despite these setbacks, he remained committed and played an integral role in the team dynamics. Owner Woody Johnson fondly recalled Rodgers' impact:
"From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here."
Statistically, Rodgers finished 25th in Total QBR, 30th in completion percentage, and 28th in yards per attempt among qualified passers in the 2024 season. These numbers reflect some of the struggles both he and the team faced throughout the year.
Rodgers has one year remaining on his contract with the Jets, but now has the opportunity to speak with other teams immediately if he chooses. His future destination remains uncertain, but his availability on the market could attract interest from franchises looking for an experienced quarterback.
