Rising Star Sonny Baker Secures England Development Contract

Sonny Baker, a promising 21-year-old fast bowler, has secured a development central contract with England, highlighting his burgeoning cricketing career. The contract, set to run until September 2025, comes after Baker showcased impressive performances, notably during the Lions tour of Australia. Known for his right-arm quick bowling, Baker has consistently clocked speeds around 90mph, catching the attention of England's cricket hierarchy.

Baker made his T20 debut for Southern Brave in The Hundred in 2022 and has since demonstrated his prowess on the field. He took 19 wickets in 11 One-Day Cup matches for Somerset before making the move to Hampshire following the conclusion of the 2024 season. His performances in Australia, including taking five wickets against a Cricket Australia XI and delivering figures of 3-60 in a first-class match against Australia A, solidified his reputation as a formidable bowler.

Andrew Flintoff, reflecting on Baker's achievements, remarked:

"He and I are very different in character and personality, but it has been a delight to see the pride he takes in wearing the Three Lions, the energy he brings to every ball, and the theatre and magic he creates on the pitch."

The development contract places Baker among other emerging talents such as Hampshire team-mate John Turner and Leicestershire's left-arm quick Josh Hull. This level of contract is part of England's strategy to nurture young talent, sitting below the full England contracts held by 27 senior players.

Baker's journey began with Somerset, where he honed his skills before joining Hampshire. His move to Hampshire marks a new chapter in his career as he continues to develop under the guidance of seasoned professionals. His dedication and professionalism have been acknowledged by many within the cricket community. Flintoff further commented on Baker's potential:

"His professionalism and dedication to every aspect of his game are an example to all. Sonny has a bright future ahead, and we look forward to continuing to work with him and Hampshire over the coming years."
